The Relationship Between Moral Character and Harm. This guide looks at Socrates' trial and sentence to death. It contends he cannot be harmed because he is pure of soul and heart. In the Apology Socrates is placed in trial for teaching philosophy to young people and giving them ideas that they might not have had before. His defense to the jury as they decide whether he shall be put to death or not is a discussion of virtue, moral character, and harm. He does not use a usual approach of specifically defending the charges against him. He turns the situation around and he is able to show that even if the jury is able to sentence him to death, they are not going to be able to harm him because of his superior moral character. The author explains his argument in simple terms and shows that the pure of heart cannot be corrupted.
