Thomas Aquinas and Natural Theology Thomas Aquinas had an interest as theologian and philosopher to make use of both disciplines in order to explain the existence of God. He also recognized that whatever explanation he developed would not readily be accepted by scientists or religious groups. His reasoning for this can be found in his understanding of a religious group’s need to base their religion on faith. He also understood that the scientific community based very little off of faith. However, to satisfy his need as half man of philosophy and half man of theology he developed a field that has been termed natural theology. Using known truths about humans as his foundation, Aquinas develops philosophical statements that both prove God’s existence and rely upon his existence for proof. This is the nature of logic in natural theology.
