1. 1800 An analysis of the characters of Hedda Gabbler by Henrik Ibsen.

In Hedda Gabbler Ibsen portrays a cast of characters who hold opposing characteristics. We may define this opposition as, effectively, between vitality and exuberance tending towards chaos on the one hand, and a restrained, orderly inertness on the other. The opposition is not exactly that of Dionysus versus Apollo - for in this distinction which Nietzsche articulated there is vitality and value, indeed a complementariness, on both sides. In this play Ibsen has expressed what emerge as basically the negative aspects of these polar opposites, the capacity for negation and destruction in each of them. This paper will, in its examination of the play's characters, explore the opposition Ibsen sets up. 7 pgs. 7 f/c. 12b.

Moreover, in each case, this confidence is inspired by both Joan's physical presence and the fact that that she's accompanied by divine indicators of the veracity of her vision. 4.5 pgs. 7 f/c. 1b.
